The week commencing Monday 23rd May saw the culmination of a number of months of conception, design and preparation work. 16 Fas Students on an LTI programme, in association with Westmeath Community Development, under the expert guidance of John Smyth Gardener at Belvedere House & Gardens, have started work on a Sensory Garden for the new LARCC Centre at Multyfarnham.
President of Ireland Mary McAleese recently visited the Franciscan Friary at Multyfarnham to launch the redevelopment of the Friary which will play host to the new home of LARCC Cancer Support Centre. Even though the new Centre will not be fully operational for some weeks to come (all services are still being delivered from the Centre in Ballinalack) work has started on a Sensory Garden which has been specially designed by Belvedere Gardener John Smyth. A very experienced and accomplished Gardener in his own right, not only has John designed the Garden but he has very much taken the project to his own heart by using all his contacts in the Horticulture, Landscaping and Building trade to have almost every aspect of the garden sponsored. In these times of very difficult economic climate for all businesses the response that John and LARCC have received from nurseries and garden suppliers from all over the country has been phenomenal. If it weren’t for these sponsors a charity such as LARCC could never dream of undertaking such a huge project as building a be-spoke sensory garden for its clients to use, enjoy and gain healing and benefit from.
John and LARCC are very excited to announce that Dermot will officially open the new LARCC Garden at Multyfarnham on Sunday 12th June. Dermot has talked publically and openly of how he has won his own battle with cancer, being diagnosed in late 2009 with stomach cancer. During his chemotherapy treatment, Dermot filmed a six-part series Dermot’s Secret Garden that followed his cancer journey while fulfilling an ambition to create his own garden sanctuary. It told the story of how Dermot reclaimed and renovated Clondeglass, a derelict cottage and two-and-half acre walled garden in Co Laois.
Donations of gardening materials or equipment for the Cancer Support Centre itself are always very welcome – For more details please contact us by phone 044 9371971, by email info@larcc.ie
